Introducing This is Oban: What is it and why should I care?

You don’t have to care really, but I do. A lot.

To put it simply, This is Oban is an online publication that promotes Oban and aims to make a positive difference in the town.

You won’t find breaking news here, instead, we’ll be creating content that makes people want to visit the Little Bay, as well as focusing on the people that make this town what it is.

What you’ll find is a celebration of Oban, articles that connect generations, and a little bit of fun here and there.

Founder, David McPhee, who was born and bred in Oban, said: “I know it sounds cliche, but this is genuinely a passion project for me. I have wanted to do this for so long, but the timing hasn’t quite been right, until now.

“What you are seeing today is the vision in its most basic form. This has been swirling around in my head for years and I have some big plans to help make Oban the best wee town on the planet. As the old adage goes, a rising tide raises all ships.”

If you’re passionate about Oban and would like to help create content in any form on a freelance basis, get in touch via the various social media platforms or send an email to hello@thisisoban.com.

The This is Oban journey

Humble beginnings

This is Oban had a very humble start. It began as a very basic blog called Inside Oban in 2015 as a way of gaining experience before going to college.

The blog gained a surprising amount of traction and served as a stepping stone in my journalism career, helping me to secure a job at The Oban Times, who I can’t thank enough for all the help over the years.

First lockdown

From there, the page sat idle for a number of years and it wasn’t until the first lockdown, when people couldn’t travel to see our wee town, that it was revived and renamed This is Oban.

The community considerably since then and now consists of 7,500 people who regularly engage with our content or share photos and videos of their own.
